”Øystese Gymnas,” founded in 1949, is a senior high school, or a sixth form school using the English term. Hence, most students are 16 years old when they enter, and 19 by the time they leave. Our school prepares its students for college/university and successful lives in the modern world. Statistics show that we are one of the top ranking senior high schools in Norway concerning grades achieved at central exams. In other words, Øystese Gymnas is a school where students acquire knowledge and appreciation of their intellectual capacity and cultural heritage.
In our academic program we can offer a wide range of subjects in which students can specialize and prepare for university or college studies:
Ø Mathematics at four different levels
Ø Human Physiology
Ø Computer Technology: programming, hardware and software
Ø World Languages: English, Spanish and German
Ø Norwegian language and literature
Ø Physical Education: specialities football and volleyball
Ø Theatre – acting
Ø Social science
Ø Business economics
Ø Study of law (Norwegian)
Ø Media: making local radio programs
Øystese Gymnas is a well-equipped school with updated computers and modern laboratories. Our teachers are all highly qualified (master’s degrees or higher), and are very devoted to their work. Students are often divided into small groups, which means they will all have a close follow up. Thus, students willing to work hard achieve top grades.
Even though we are not a boarding school, our village, Øystese, offers a variety of rooms/small apartments to rent within walking distance from our school.
Øystese Gymnas is well known for its international connections. Every year we send 20 students to a Lutheran High School in Missouri, the USA, and we have students from different parts of the world come here. This year we have students from Austria, Somalia, Persia, and the Philippines. Earlier we have had people come from Brazil, Italy, the USA, Germany, Japan, and Russia.
In addition to sending students to the USA for one year, we go abroad for a week every year taking all the second year students with us. This year we are going to Prague, whereas last year we went to Tallinn. Third year students have the opportunity to go abroad in smaller groups where the aim can be to practice one of the foreign languages offered, or to study specific social or scientific subjects.

Øystese Gymnas is situated in Kvam Municipality in the western part of Norway. This municipality and several others together make up the region of Hardanger, which is centered around the Hardanger Fjord.
Hardanger evokes happy sentiments in the average Norwegian. Strongly associated with the National Romantic Era, people even today perceive Hardanger in terms of the stunning and spectacular: Traditions, folk music, fruit blossoms and marvellous scenery. People visit from all over the world to explore scenic contrasts as varied as glaciers and cherry blossoms; deep fjords and high mountains; a mild and temperate climate which allows skiing in both summer and wintertime.
Although the scenery is undoubtedly an important asset for the region, Hardanger is more than just a pretty face. The region has industries like ship building, fish farming, tourism, manufacture of furniture, alongside more traditional agriculture and fishery. Kvam municipality also offers a wide variety of public as well as private services for your everyday needs. In your leisure time you can participate in many different activities connected to sports, music and culture. If you rather want to lean back and be entertained, the movie theatre shows movies twice a week, and in addition there are often concerts.
From time to time each and every one of us may need a change of air. There may be days when even Hardanger will be too much. When you need a break from all the beauty and harmony, Bergen, the 2nd largest city in Norway, is only an hour’s drive away. Having enjoyed the hustle and bustle of urban life, you can yet again retreat to the quiet charms of Hardanger.
Don’t let the chance to explore this gem of a region pass by you!
